Check out the new coffee arrivals at Shenandoah Joe.
Sumatra Permata Gayo Coop
This coop was formed in 2005 after a peace accord ended a decade long civil war. The coop is located in the northern Gayo Mountain region of Sumatra. In this coffee you will not find the typical Sumatran characteristics, instead you will find floral notes of orange peel up front mellowing into a sweet blackberry with hints of dark chocolate. It does, however, keep its full bodied characteristic.
• Country of Origin: Sumatra
• Varietals: Ateng Jeluk, Linies, Bor Bor
• Altitude: 5000-6000 ft.
• Farm: Permata Gayo Coop
Dave’s thought:
Loved this coffee the first time I cupped it. It is really smooth and fruity. All Sumatra drinkers should try this coffee.
Costa Rica Finca Cerro Paldo
Just 45 minutes south of San Jose is Finca Cerro Paldo in the district of Aserri, Tarbaca, a microregion of the popular coffee region of Tarrazu. Cerro Paldo is owned by the Monge Valverde family. Adam Monge Castro bought 2 hectares of land more than 60 years ago and began this coffee tradition. Ten people currently live on the farm and are devoted to produce high quality coffee. The farm is a member of the Asociacion Agropecuaria de Productores de Acosta y Aserri, a producer association with the objective of adding value to their products by establishing strict quality standards on coffee production and processing. This effort paid off when in 2007 they won first place in the Costa Rica Cup of Excellence.
• Country of Origin: Costa Rica
• Varietals: Catura and Catuai
• Altitude: 5570 ft.
• Farm: Cerro Paldo
In Cerro Paldo coffee you will find an intense floral aroma. It is full bodied with rich sweet flavor and citric fruity notes.
Dave’s thought:
This coffee must be tried, a former COE winner from a family that puts out great coffee. This is a real summer treat that won’t last long.
Organic Colombian Sierra Nevada
This is a Fair Trade coop coffee from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta region of northern Colombia. It has a smooth start with milk chocolate and walnut notes. It is a well balanced coffee.
• Country of Origin: Colombia
• Varietals: Typica
• Altitude: 3300-4300 ft.
• Farm(s): indigenous communities of 800 families
Dave’s thought:
Another example of a great Colombian coffee. It is medium to full bodied and really smooth throughout the cup. Try it over ice.

Shenandoah Joe Barista to Compete in National Competition
Our own Shellie Adams is headed to Minneapolis to compete in the "New World Latte Art Championship" at Coffee Fest. She will be competing on June 3rd. This is a single elimination event with 32 participants competing head to head until there are only two left. We can't wait to see how she does (we think she will do great). We are very excited and proud that she was picked to participate in this competition. Way to go Shellie!

Dave our resident master roaster and green coffee buyer has brought in some very interesting coffees. Check them out below:
El Salvador Finca los Planes
This is the first pacamara varietal that we have brought into the store. Finca los Planes is owed by Sergio and Isabel Ticas, they began growing coffee 13 years ago in the mountainous region of Chalatenango, El Salvador. The money from the Cup of Excellence auction was used to improve the beneficial on the farm, thereby improving the processing of future harvests. This usage of the money showed us that Finca Los Planes was truly dedicated to quality and constant improvement.
• Country of Origin: El Salvador
• Varietal: Pacamara
• Altitude(meters): 1600.00
• Farm(s): Los Planes
Finca Los Planes' Pacamara is an amazing coffee that is grown on a Pacamara variety tree. This unique variety is a combination of the giant Maragogype variety with a more traditional and tasty Paca variety. The Pacamara is intensely sweet and creamy, with notes of sweet citrus and subtle red fruit.
Dave’s thought:
"One of the best coffees out of El Salvador I have had in the last few years."
Sumatra Blue Batak
The Blue Batak was part of our Holiday Blend 2009 Edition. We brought in enough that we would have some to sell as a single origin after the holidays, since it dually deserves to stand on its own. This coffee is grown around lake Toba, one of the deepest most beautiful lakes in the world. It is harvested by the Indigenous Batak Tribe. Blue Batak is a particularly refined version of the traditional style of fruity, earthy Sumatra coffee. It has a Sweet-toned aromatic woody, fruity aroma. A heavy bodied coffee and sweetly pungent, with earth tones that lean toward rich malt. Those who enjoy exotically complex flavors in a balanced cup will enjoy this exceptional coffee.
• Country of Origin: Sumatra
• Varietals: Ateng, Djember, Timtim
• Altitude(meters): 950
• Farm(s): various
Dave’s thought:
"I liked Lake Tawar so much I wanted to try another coffee from that region. It lives up to expectation."
Tanzanian Peaberry Burka Estate
Burka Estates is one of Tanzanian’s oldest specialty coffee producers. Located on the slopes of Mt. Meru, in the shadows of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Burka is committed to sustainable growing practices – native trees provide shade for the coffee plants, weeding is done mechanically and by hand, cherry pulp and other organic matter is used as fertilizer, and the plantation is habitat to many native birds. Burka is also committed to sustainable community practices, building schools in the region and helping to rehabilitate natural springs to supply clean water to the community.
This coffee has a smooth full body, mellow acidity with a wonderful bright citrus character with hints of orange and chocolate throughout.
• Country of Origin: Tanzania
• Varietals: Kent, Bourbon, SL
• Altitude: 4,440 to 4,800 ft.
• Farm(s): Burka Estate Selian
Dave’s thought:
"Richard at Royal NY told me about this peaberry. It’s a great spring coffee."
